Wolfgang Redka-Svoboda: Teaching medicine gave me the invaluable opportunity to combine all my hobbies

What does your imagination depict when you hear about the profession of a doctor? White hospital gowns, tight germ-proof gloves, sophisticated terms, which could quite surprise even a well-educated person, dusty medical cards, illegible handwriting and a long queue of patients in the lobby? If you dig deeper, after changing your point of view and getting rid of annoying stereotypes — like those, which were mentioned above, you will see the doctor's occupation from an entirely different, new and entertaining side. In his blog for estet-portal.com, a plastic surgeon, Associate Professor of the Medical University of Paracelsus in Salzburg, Head of the Anatomical Course Expert Day Anatomy, a Member of the German Society of Surgeons, the Society for Mesotherapy, the European Academy of Aesthetic Surgery and the International Society for Aesthetic Medicine, specialist in volumetric modeling of the face Wolfgang Redka-Svoboda (Germany) talks on up to which point multifaceted the profession of a doctor can be with the right approach to it.

Do you continue your private surgical practice?

W. R.-S.: I gave several years of my life to a real surgical practice, which is performed in a classical hospital. Since 1992, when I graduated from the university and became a certified specialist, I was engaged in surgery non-stop. I helped my patients to follow their goals: both to get rid of diseases and its visual consequences and to improve the aesthetic side of their appearances. I was a general surgeon and a plastic one. It lasted for more than 20 years in general. Now, with so many days of practice behind my shoulders, I decided to challenge myself and tackle something else, so my answer is no, I stopped private surgical practice, to be exact, three years ago.

What do you do instead of your practical surgery now? Is your current field of activities at least somehow connected with medicine?

W. R.-S.: Now I am mainly busy with the activity of giving professional surgical workshops around the world. I organize master-classes, lectures and training courses to make other doctors share their secrets and experience with their colleagues all over the world. I have visited dozens of countries, in some of them I have been for several times. I have traveled literally all over the planet, and all of this is due to my new activity vector — educative program gives me the precious opportunity to broaden not only mine, but the minds of hundreds of people.

Why did I decide to currently stop the surgical practice? As soon as I started practicing aesthetic medicine, not general surgery, I founded my so called “lectures-on-wheels”. The demand for holding a seminar, explaining the peculiarities of operations on certain parts of the body, continuously grew every day — and I simply did not have enough time to deal with operations that I love. I like working with people, but what I do love even more — is working with people from different countries and cultures, that's why now I decided to focus on teaching others: only in this way can I do everything I like.

Does educational practice help a doctor to develop personally and professionally or vice versa — only wastes his time?

W. R.-S.: It helps the doctor to develop — both professionally and personally! I can not speak out for about all the doctors, I just do not know the story of their experiences, I'll tell you about how the lecture in different countries changed my life. First, teaching gave me the opportunity to combine all my hobbies — traveling, speaking to a large audience, helping people to avoid possible post-surgical problems — and so I preferred the lecture hall, not my own surgical practice. When you work only with patients, you live the life of one doctor, when in the course of teaching colleagues share with you tens of thousands of other stories, you live at least 100 doctors' lives.

I believe that the ideal recipe for a medical career is the following: first, the doctor needs to put his hand into dozens of years of practical training, deepening into surgery by experience, and only then organize “lectures-on-wheels-courses” to share the experience and listen to colleagues who have managed to form their way to success up the career ladder.
